simply put. . . . yep.

I can legitimately not be a hypocrite here because mythical hero creation always gets me suspicous and antsy. I think Jeter's flaws have been pretty clear over the years. That said I really don't care.

Both Arod and Jeter are human's, both are flawed.

It is hysterical though to suggest that Jeter is the one who created this mythical Cap'n Winny McGriterson. Ian Occonnor, amazing.

Well put William. Just like the media first ignored steroids and annointed Sammy Mark, and then turned on them with vitriol... so too, Jeter has been turned from King to whipping boy. It is all on the media. Jeter himself has said and done little to garner much of an opinion about him either way.

I personally do find ARod to be a sympathetic character. I haven't seen this book, but I did read that after 'The' article, when ARod realized how he had thrown Jeter under the bus, that he immediately flew to Jeter's home, in tears, to apologize. ARod is obviously an insecure guy, who ergot, often had his foot in his mouth. On that account, he is the polar opposite of Jeter. However, I think ARod has a good heart, and over the last 3 years, has appeared to be a decent guy and good teammate.

For the 2 years before Jeter's contract, when it was being discussed on blogs, I was VERY against a big and long contract. I didn't think it was good for the Yankees. I'm not much for idolatry (except of course for Mantle), and didn't think Jeter should get rewarded for the past. But I also strongly opined that it could be terrible for Jeter himself.

A lot of the shit flying Jeter's way (and much more to come), is not because he is declining.... but because he's getting paid like he's in his prime. If he had signed for 2/$20m, his possible demise would only sadden us. But because of the money and years he (fought for) and got, he is now a target. 'Unselfish and 'team player' just don't fit his current contract.

I believe because of the contract, many fans will turn on Jeter and his reputation will be greatly tarnished. It is already happening, and there are 3 more years to go.

Unfortunately, Jeter fought to put this target on his back. He didn't really need the money. When Cashman offered 3/$45m, he should have jumped on it, and had a press conference, thanking the Yankees for their generosity and faith in him. Had he done that, his future, in relation to the fans, would be very different.
