After “Losing the Off Season”, Yanks Are Winning the WAR in April

Over the winter, much was made about how Theo Epstein and the Boston Red Sox won the offseason, while Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees were left out in the cold. Well, after only one month, the tables have been turned. At least in April, it’s Cashman who is now winning the WAR.

Theo Epstein was credited with winning the off season...

Despite spending half as much money as the Red Sox, the Yankees have enjoyed nearly three more wins above replacement from their offseason acquisitions. A good portion of that value has been contributed by Russell Martin, who has turned out to be one of the best steals of the offseason. In fact, according to fangraphs, only Jeff Francoeur and Lance Berkman have had higher WARs among position players who changed teams over the winter.

In addition to Martin, the Yankees have also had strong contributions from a group of players that most thought were better suited to an Old Timers team than a pennant contender. Andruw Jones, Eric Chavez, Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia have all seemingly turned back the clock 10 years by combining for approximately two wins above replacement. Even better, the quartet is only costing the Yankees $6 million.

Molina Gets a Parting Gift; Avoids Joining the Ranks of Hitless Yankees

Lost amid the Yankees’ barrage of 12 runs and 13 hits in yesterday’s lopsided victory over the White Sox was a seemingly inconsequential pop fly double in the bottom of the eighth.

Catcher Roy Luebbe never got a hit in the majors.

The double, which landed safely because of a miscommunication between shortstop Alexei Ramirez and left fielder Mark Teahen, was Gustavo Molina’s first hit in six plate appearances. By reaching safely, the backup catcher not only became the last member of the team to fill the hit column, but also removed the “0-fer” from his Yankees career. With Francisco Cervelli rehabbing in the minors, last night’s at bat could wind up being Molina’s last in pinstripes, so the fortuitous bounce was almost like a parting gift.

Had Molina’s pop fly been caught, he could have joined a select fraternity of non-pitchers who never recorded a hit with the Yankees. In honor of his accomplishment, listed below are the names of the group that Molina managed to avoid joining.

Molina’s double was actually his sixth career hit (spanning five teams), so even if his stint with the Yankees remained fruitless, he would have still had a batting average upon which to fall back. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Roy Luebbe.

No End in Sight: A Look at Closers with the Longest Blown Save Streaks

By closing out yesterday’s 3-1 victory over the White Sox, Mariano Rivera not only helped snap the Yankees’ first two-game losing streak of the season, but he also put an end to his own streak of two consecutive blown saves.

Dave Righetti blew four consecutive saves in 1988 despite compiling an ERA of 3.60 over the span.

Over his long and illustrious career, Rivera has blown two consecutive saves on eight different occasions, but never has he allowed the skid to reach three, a distinction he shares with other great closers like Trevor Hoffman, Troy Percival and Dennis Eckersley.

The record for most consecutive blown saves is four, a mark shared by nine different pitchers. Most recently, the White Sox’ Matt Thornton joined that list by coughing up four straight leads at the beginning of the month. Who knows what else Ozzie Guillen coughed up while watching?

Yankees Officially Apologize for Leaking Season Ticket Holders’ Personal Information

The New York Yankees have officially acknowledged and apologized for the unintended distribution of personal information pertaining to nearly 20,000 non-premium season ticket account holders.

The breach occurred on Monday when an account representative accidentally attached a spreadsheet containing the data to an email newsletter. Since then, word of the snafu has gained wide notoriety, including a feature story on Deadspin.com. Before details about the incident surfaced in the media, the Yankees had made no effort to contact the effected account holders. Listed below is the text of the email apology that was sent just before 9:00 PM this evening.

Dear Yankees Season Ticket Licensee,

We are writing to inform you about an accidental electronic distribution of information that you have previously supplied to the New York Yankees.

Monday evening, April 25, 2011 an employee of the Yankees sent an e-mail to several hundred Yankees Season Ticket Licensees.  The e-mail mistakenly attached an internal Yankees spreadsheet that listed the following information associated with your New York Yankees account:

  • Your name, and the address, phone number(s), fax number, and e-mail address that you previously provided to the Yankees
  • Your seat numbers, Yankees account number, Yankees account representative name, and the ticket package code associated with your account

NO OTHER INFORMATION WAS INCLUDED IN THE DOCUMENT THAT WAS ACCIDENTALLY ATTACHED TO THE APRIL 25TH E-MAIL. THE DOCUMENT DID NOT INCLUDE ANY BIRTH DATES, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS, CREDIT CARD DATA, BANKING DATA, OR ANY OTHER PERSONAL OR FINANCIAL INFORMATION. 

Please note, immediately upon learning of the accidental attachment of the internal spreadsheet, remedial measures were undertaken so as to assure that a similar incident could not happen again.

The Yankees deeply regret this incident, and any inconvenience that it might cause.
